Damp caused by guttering rarely appears overnight. It is usually the result of the same small fault being ignored through several wet seasons.
Early warning signs
A damp patch on an internal wall that only appears after heavy rain, peeling paint on a fascia board, a persistent green or black stain down one section of brickwork, and a gutter joint that drips steadily rather than during heavy rain only.
Why it gets worse quickly
Once water starts finding a consistent path down a wall, the masonry stops getting the chance to dry out between wet spells. Cavity walls can bridge water across the gap over time, and older solid-wall properties absorb it even faster.
